Peptides for a dog’s skin and coat

A dull coat and senior skin are usually diet, thyroid, allergies or parasites before they are anything else. Once those are handled, this is what owners use.

First, your vet

Rule out the common causes: a skin exam, a thyroid panel, flea control and a look at the diet. Collagen peptides in the bowl are a different thing from GHK-Cu and are worth trying first.

What owners use

COAT (GHK-Cu) daily for eight weeks, dosed by band. The Show Coat bundle adds GUT for dogs whose skin follows their stomach.

Canitide products are sold for research purposes and are not FDA-approved drugs. Talk to your veterinarian before starting any protocol, and bring the dosing card.

What the research is

GHK-Cu has 1990s canine open-wound healing research, a 2018 review of its regenerative actions, and a 2008 review of the tripeptide in tissue remodeling. The coat use is an extrapolation from skin remodeling.

Primary sources only, each labeled with the model it was studied in.

Questions

How long until I see a difference?

Hair grows slowly. Photograph the same spot weekly; owners report changes over the eight-week cycle.

Can it help hot spots?

GHK-Cu is studied for wound support, which is why owners of hot-spot-prone dogs use it. A hot spot itself needs cleaning and, often, a vet visit.
